In no specific order, here are 10 things I love doing in Virtual Reality
VR has become a significant part of my life, and one of my favorite pastimes is introducing friends to the immersive experiences it offers. Here are some of my top VR things that never fail to leave a lasting impression:
Watch a Movie In Bigscreen VR
This is my go-to activity in VR, and I can't stop raving about it to anyone who will listen. Bigscreen is a prime example of an experience that truly shines in VR but would be prohibitively expensive and challenging to replicate in real life. Recently, they even added native Disney+ and Amazon Prime integrations! If you have a high-end computer and an Index headset, it's like having your private cinema. The best part? You can change the scenery to various charming environments, from a cozy campsite to a theater in space.
Do a Google Earth VR Tour
My first jaw-dropping moment in VR happened while exploring Google Earth VR. It was during my time working at an advertising company that promoted VR games, and we had the first Vive and a powerful computer at our disposal. The initial Google Earth VR tour left me awestruck, giving me "wonder shivers" and sparking my love for the technology. I'd spend hours after work exploring the world, clicking through various places. I recently asked my girlfriend to challenge me by suggesting a place and she immediately chose North Korea. To my surprise there were lots of areas I could visit although I assume heavily curated. Even with a Quest 2, you can get a taste of this experience using the "Wander" app.
Go Out West in Real VR Fishing
I never thought I'd enjoy fishing, but Real VR Fishing changed my perspective. I initially got the game as an attempt to bond with my father, but I ended up falling in love with it. The game's scenes are breathtaking, offering a delightful way to immerse yourself in nature. I can only imagine how much more enjoyable it would be with friends, sipping a cold drink, and casting lines during a chilly Minnesota winter.
Visit the Hayao Miyazaki World in VR Chat
This hidden gem in VR Chat requires a bit of a search to find. I use a unique world filled with Christmas-themed cat avatars as my portal to this enchanting place. The Miyazaki world is a spectacle in itself. You can explore Howl's castle, have tea with a sleeping Totoro, and even witness a day/night cycle with falling star soul things from Howl's Moving Castle. The Spirited Away bathhouse also makes an appearance for you to explore. There's much more to discover, so go ahead and seek it out! Please note that this experience is for PC VR users only.
Watch the Video From the Space Station Observatory
In the Quest 2 TV app, there's a remarkable 10-minute time-lapse video from the space station observatory. This fully 3D experience is one of the most profound VR encounters out there. While it may not be ultra-high definition, it's incredibly easy to suspend disbelief and feel like you're actually in space, which is an extraordinary sensation.
Build a Civilization in Deism
If you enjoy civilization simulation games, Deism VR is a must-try. As a god, you'll create zoning districts and witness the evolution of your civilization. Want to resolve conflicts? Throw a plague. Facing heretics? Show them your divine power. It's an engaging and hilarious experience.
Play Through The Vader Immortal Trilogy
For the ultimate Star Wars experience, the Vader Immortal trilogy stands out. Designed with VR in mind, it offers lightsaber battles, intriguing characters, and a dose of Star Wars lore. Prepare to duel with Darth Vader himself!
Meditate
VR is a surprisingly effective tool for meditation. Apps like Tripp VR, Liminal, and Maloka have become essential in my daily routine, bringing a sense of calm and self-improvement. Tripp VR, with its enchanting scenes and diverse meditation options, is my personal favorite. While I bought a lifetime pass during early access, you can explore these VR meditation experiences to find the one that suits you best.
Workout in Supernatural
Supernatural VR has become my daily workout routine. If you're curious about middle-aged moms getting fit and debating workout music, check out their Facebook group. Yes, I'm one of those moms! Dancing to pop music in breathtaking virtual locales is surprisingly fun. While it likely requires a subscription due to licensing fees, it's been worth every penny for me. I've maintained a workout routine for nearly three years now, which is quite an achievement.
Watch Hugh Hou Videos
Hugh Hou is a VR enthusiast who creates soothing and captivating content. His videos often feature cool VR cameras and virtual tours that I find fascinating. You can find his content in the YouTube VR app or the Quest 2 TV app.
More To Come!
VR has opened up a world of possibilities, offering experiences that span from serene meditation to heart-pounding lightsaber battles. It's a technology that continues to amaze me, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for virtual reality.
